Exclusive First Drive Review of 2020 MG Gloster Automatic SUV 7 Seater
Yesterday we talked about the Gloster features and technology on offer while today we will talk about the driving performance plus engine and of course the 4WD system.
HOW IS GLOSTER DRIVE?
Powering the Gloster is a twin-turbo 2.0 diesel and that is again something its rivals do not have (twin-turbo). The Gloster makes 218 bhp and 480Nm. The gearbox is 8-speed automatic and that is standard throughout the range. Start the Gloster and it is surprisingly silent given the nature it has (big SUV and big diesel engine). It is not noisy at all for such a big diesel and in the city at low speeds it is remarkably refined. Driving the Gloster is also much easier than you think because of decent visibility and a good driving position. In slow traffic the steering of the Gloster is the lightest amongst the Fortuner or Endeavour.

That makes driving this big monster in our city much easier. The Gloster feels more like a smaller SUV behind the wheel. So parking or other things is easy, though you have to keep in mind the size which means finding a parking spot might not be easy! The 8-speed automatic though is a bit slow to respond and at low speeds while smooth, there is some lag you have to deal with.
Post mid-range is where the Gloster gets a more muscular power delivery and once the roads open up, it drives with good enough power on tap. The torque and power is enough to push this SUV to big speeds with ease but that said the engine gets vocal. The 8-speed auto makes for a relaxing drive in the Gloster and it is way more smooth or engaging than its rivals. Plus you also get paddle shifts which are important for that instant bit of performance however the sport mode is enough in the Gloster to do that. There are drive modes of course and the Auto/sport and Eco are all there to change the way this SUV drives.
Sport is where I thought the SUV works for performance and on the highway. In terms of braking performance, the all round disc brakes do a very good job and despite the length and weight of this SUV, the Gloster stops well and reassuringly. The ride at low speeds has the firmness that you expect in a SUV of this type but once speeds increase the tyres, suspension all do a great job of swallowing bad roads and it feels smooth and stable.
OFF ROAD MG GLOSTER REVIEW
The Gloster gets on-demand 4WD and modes for that including Mud/Sand/Snow/Rock. These alter the way the SUV drives in these conditions so that you do not get stuck. There is no proper low-range but it does have a BorgWarner Transfer Case and rear differential. The 210mm ground clearance is good and despite the size, the Gloster is very capable off-road with good grunt and traction plus the various modes and all that technology makes it much easier. It goes through bad roads with ease and the 550mm wading depth is handy for our monsoons too!
VERDICT
The Gloster on road feels way more relaxed and better to drive than any of the other ladder frame SUVs and feels more like a luxury SUV which is priced a lot more. It is the perfect SUV to be driven around in and is more comfortable yet off-road due to the tech being capable too.
MG GLOSTER RIVALS
The new Gloster will face stiff competition from Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Watch out for our full-size SUV comparison test report.
